Busy day in Health

Today our team working on the cervical cancer topic had a busy day. We started with meeting with Dr. Nakato, who is the program officer in the Ministry of Health (MOH) for the HPV vaccination program in Kitui County. We had a very interesting talk with her, learning about the successful start of the demonstration project - which is to show that the HPV vaccination of grade 4 girls (age about 9 years) can be handled.

In the afternoon, we met Saheed from the newly founded IBM Research Lab in Nairobi, as he is a team of research and DEs that is also working on cervical cancer. We had an excited meeting - sorry Saheed, we were all so passionate...

The IBM Research Lab is located on the campus of the Catholic University of East Africa in Nairobi. This is a very nice location - and the Research Lab is just starting its operations, and therefore using office space in the new Pope Paul VI. library, until the buildings for IBM are ready.
We therefore also met Pope Paul VI. who seemed to be present in a rather interesting shape, that was not directly obvious to us... maybe it was a gift?

Ein ausgefüllter Tag für das Team "Health"

Heute hatten wir einen ausgefüllten Tag - begonnen haben wir bei Dr. Nakato aus dem Gesundheitsministerium, die für das HPV Impfprogramm gegen eine Infektion mit den HP-Viren verantwortlich ist. HP-Viren lösen Gebärmutterhalskrebs aus, deswegen ist die Impfung so wichtig. Zur Zeit läuft ein Pilotprogramm für HPV-Impfungen in einem der Counties, in Kitui. Es werden die Mädchen in der 4. Klasse flächendeckend geimpft, das sind in Kitui rund 21.000. Das Programm läuft sehr gut, und wir haben viele interessante Infos bekommen. Beim Foto hat Dr. Nakato sehr bedauert, heute nicht ihre Pumps ausgewählt zu haben...

Heute nachmittag waren wir dann bei einem IBM Kollegen zu Besuch - Saheed, der zum IBM Forschungslabor gehört, das gerade erst gegründet worden ist. Saheed ist in einem Team, das auch zum Thema Gebärmutterhalskrebs arbeitet. Das IBM Forschungslabor ist auf dem Gelände der katholischen Universität von Ostafrika in Nairobi. Da die Räumlichkeiten gerade noch renoviert werden, ist die IBM im Gebäude der neuen Bibliothek "Papst Paul VI." untergebracht.
Der Papst war auch da - wir haben ihn allerdings fast nicht erkannt, da er recht modern interpretiert ist... wir vermuten, die Statue war ein Geschenk..
