Teachers still on strike and budget discussion gets heated

The teachers are still on strike - though there was even a court decision that they had to go back to work. But, it seems there are a lot of things beside the salary that needs more discussion - for example the government decision to hand a laptop to every primary school student. The teachers claim that it is way to early for this, as the children should rather focus on base competencies such as reading and writing before getting to a laptop. There is not yet a curriculum developed - something subteam #1 could have supported :-) - but the budget for buying the laptops is already reserved..

The budget discussion of the counties go on - some more counties decided to invest most of their budget in the health facilities. This is something we understand quite well after we had a chance to visit the Kenyatta National Hospital yesterday - this is the leading Kenyan public hospital. Though, its building, supplies and technical, especially IT infrastructure environment, could need some improvement.

Die Lehrer streiken immer noch - neben den Forderungen nach mehr Gehalt sind andere Themen dazu gekommen, z.B. die Initiative der Regierung, dass jedes Kind einen Laptop bekommen soll. Dies wird heftig kritisiert, weil die Kinder erst mal Lesen und Schreiben lernen sollen - bevor der Laptop ins Spiel kommt. Ausserdem ist der Lehrplan mit und für den Laptop noch nicht erstellt - aber das Geld für die Laptops ist schon reserviert. Da hätte unser Team #1 gut helfen können.
Die Lehrergewerkschaft heisst übrigens "KNUT" (Kenya National Union of Teachers) - vielleicht suchen die sich mal einen Werbepartner aus Schweden?
Die Budgetdiskussionen der Counties gehen weiter. Weitere Counties haben verkündet, dass sie größere Teile des Budgets in die Gesundheitseinrichtungen investieren wollen. Das können wir um so besser verstehen, nachdem wir gestern im Kenyatta National Hospital waren, dem größten und führenden öffentlichen Krankenhaus des Landes. Dort konnte man sehen, wie viele Investitionen erforderlich sind...
